On a subject of gambling, I'd say a good thing would be a spin wheel, where you have to use gems to spin and get an item unique to the wheel.

But not sure how to make it suit crys. Though for the taboo-ness of it? Pokemon Soul-Silver and Heart-Gold came up with a suitable alternative to gambling with a card flip game in the Western Versions, though the japanese version remains unedited. Gambling is illegal in most places with special exceptions. In the US Gambling is legal pretty much only in Las Vegas, and for State Lotteries, although a lotto is the most benign form of gambling. Indian reservations are free to open their own casinos because they are not technically US territory.

Gambling is strictly controlled for a reason. It can be addict forming for many and when involved with real currency destroys families and lives. While obviously Palla is not a huge safety concern if you lose it, the fact that you CAN lose all of your Palla in some unlucky strings of gambling sounds very unfair, regardless of your opportunity to strike it rich.

The entire fact of carefully balancing any gambling games, placing ratios properly and fairly, and the entire aspect of cheating, claims of cheating, and angst about "game bias" against your player.

I think we should leave a site with many teens happily outside of the horrible institution that is gambling. Worst of all, it would take a lot of focus away from speaking and interacting on the forums, and instead into a slot machine booth where you sit quietly and stare at the high rolling. A depressing reality.

That's all nice and whatnot Shugo, but I don't think anyone has been presenting the idea of actually gambling for money, or an in-site currency only obtainable through the use of money (gems). The whole thing about it being illegal doesn't exactly matter when no money is changing hands. It would be easier to manage the chance of someone losing -too much- in-site normal currency with enforced amounts of currency being brought to a table, rather than a user determined number by whoever starts any given table. Maybe there could be a restriction on how many times a user could start or join a table per day. It wouldn't be -that- hard to manage.

I don't mean its illegal in the sense that we shouldn't be allowed to do it. Obviously it is fake currency. What I mean is, there is a lot of reasoning behind why it is restricted, and we should examine those lessons learned.

It is a huge new mechanic to add to a site for purposes of gaining currency which is mostly done through posting. There are real consequences both positive and negative to implementing it. All I am saying is we need to review it carefully before deciding. People WILL get pissed when they don't make a lot of currency, people will probably leave if they "lose it all" at the slots so to say. I've seen it happen on other sites and it is a natural response.

It comes down to what kind of community we want to build, and what our focus should be.

I'm all for card games, but honestly, playing for any direct currency, fake or real, is a dumb idea. The reason it works on Gaia and other places with successful gambling is because they gave it its own special buy-in currency. Chips, tokens, whatever, that you CAN"T buy with $$. Only palla or whatever earned currency would be. So if someone lost their palla and subsequently their shit, they might be less likely to ragequit.

Indian is a really really terrible term to use for first nations. Please don't. There are several other politically correct terms. Using Indian is actually quite rude and completely incorrect.

If it's addiction purposes -- that's bull. Blame the person's weakness for destroying their own family and not the gambling. The way general society encouraging shirking responsibility off on anything else but the person at fault is completely enabling the problem.

It would not be illegal to have a casino for fake currency, just like it isn't illegal to put gambling in video games. It's just socially frowned upon. It's not even restricted either, for fake currency. Crys could have one if Tyler wanted, but it really just doesn't fit into crys regardless. So Tyler won't likely add one.

I wouldn't mind something similar to help /lose/ currency rather than gain. c:
